Global warming brings many water problems. One way around them is to use desalination. Another is to obtain water from air! Several products are in development or are on the market already. You watch – this trend will become a tsunami.

Global warming causes water shortages through droughts and disappearing glaciers. It also causes polluted water sources when there are floods, such as in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

Indeed several reports on the impacts of global warming suggest the possibility of wars between nations over water.

So there is a great and growing need to alleviate water shortages and for clean drinking water.

There are several approaches to harvesting humidity in the air around us. Of course the first is to minimise the effects of global warming through going to the causes. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and to “reduce, re-use and recycle” are primary strategies.

Next, there are various technologies that can help. These include

Desalination is now widely used but water from air technology is the next trend.

Condensation

Dr Max Whisson has been called the Water And Wind Wizard of Oz. He has patented the “Whisson Windmill”, or “Water Harvester”, as he prefers to call it. It harvests water from air.

How?

Well, Dr Whisson was inspired by a little African beetle which collects the early morning’s condensed water from its own body. From that observation he developed his windmill that produces water from air.

As Dr Whisson has put it: “The amount of water available in the air is for all forseeable practical purposes unlimited. The bottom 1 kilometre (in the atmosphere) alone contains about 1.000,000,000,000,000 litres of water and that is turned over every few hours. The “Whisson Windmill” or Max Water From Air device will make it possible to get adequate water anywhere at any time, drought or no drought.”

The water you see collecting on the ground under your car’s airconditioner is an example of the same condensation process that Whisson uses.

The Whisson windmill is essentially a wind turbine which is connected to a refrigeration compressor. A refrigerant cools the blades of the wind turbine, after which it is returned to a compressor. The “free” energy from wind drives the cooled blades of the turbine and water is then condensed from the ambient air. This water is then collected.

This remarkable invention is under development with the University of Western Australia.

Similar to Whisson’s Windmill water from air principle the Air Water Pty Ltd’s Air Water Machines also harvest water from air by using a condensation method. Its units are on the market now, with capacities ranging from 28 litres (7 gallons) per day to 5000 litres per day (1321 gallons).

Water absorption by salt

This approach harvests water from air by forcing air through a liquid lithium chloride salt solution. This compound attracts water from the air, after which it is extracted and filtered through table salt which acts as a natural disinfectant. The final step is to filter this water through a carbon filter, adding taste.

These units can make up to 1200 gallons of drinking water per day and have been purchased by The US FESA for emergency relief purposes.

Water from air – The Holy Grail?

So you see there are some pretty interesting developments under way that promise clean water. But are these alone the answer to a sustainable future?

We cannot use technology to refreeze disappearing glaciers or the ice caps, refill rivers, remake their entire ecology or stop rising oceans due to global warming.

More than technology is needed for that – useful as it is. A truly sustainable future will involve love of our home, the Earth, and for each other. Simple as that.

When will Halloween arrive! Its taking so long to get here. I am looking forward to terrifying the little ones out trick-or-treating. I wear my vampire gear complete with glued on fangs, special make up and a dark long cloak. And I am confident I resemble the real thing when I am done.

Just ask the numerous small ghouls, witches and monsters that came knocking on my door last year. I paid a high price for my fun though, in the form of large handfuls of candy. But it was worth it. Halloween is just one day. I think everyone should get into the swing of it and enjoy the whole ghoulish experience. Are you ready for Halloween? Do you have your costume?

So what will you be? There are always people drawn to the Jason or Freddy costumes. I don’t know what it is about those flicks. What reason could there be for wanting to walk about as a movie serial killer? I don’t know. But like them, it’s the same costume every year for me.

I’m sure like the fans of Freddy or the vampire ensemble I have, you are drawn to some specific area, be it werewolf or witch. In recent years more and more people are taking more interest in there image. I think its hard not to when were constantly being bombarded by pictures of blokes like David Beckham posing in his CK boxer shorts or showing off his designer stubble. TV and magazine seem to be full of incredibly pretty girls all dressed up to the nines. It often makes you feel that these people are out of my league.

Let me tell you one thing. They most certainly are not.

So should I rush out and buy a new suit. Should I buy those funky jeans I saw some madferrit rapper wearing last week.

No. Stop. That cool as a cucumber rapper can get away with dressing like a clown shoe. Usually because he drives a Bentley, and has more money than it often seems possible to own.

Dress to what you do. Most of the people who read this column certainly aren’t usually city traders or rappers for that matter. We’re plumbers, builders, brick layers and all those other dirty trader where you wouldn’t want to wear an Armani suit to even if you could.

Perhaps one of the most important things the trades man can own is good quality work wear. Good quality work wear keeps you warm. It keeps you dry. But above all else it keeps you safe.

One often over looked point of work wear is how long one wears it for. For example the average electrician works about nine hours Monday to Friday. That’s nearly fifty hours a week! Not to mention the time it take to get to and from work and remember some people don’t change clothes when the get in from work. (We’re talking about work wear her not actually work.) If we also say the average person sleeps for eight hours a night, which equates to 56 hours a week. So out of a one hundred and sixty eight hour week the our Joe Bloggs average electrician spends around a third of his time in his work gear.

What I can’t really understand is for something that you spend so much time in why not buy the best you can afford. As apposed to the mentality “Its only for work. Any old this will do.”

In making an effort for work not only will you look physically better. You will mentally feel much more successful and confident. Even if its just a small amount. In this day and age this writer defiantly believes its worth in.

Once you start dressing better for work you’ll sub consciously start dressing better all the time. There aren’t many companies out there that make nice work wear. Most of it is functional first fashionable never. However I do know of a few, and in which way to point you. Snickers are a Swedish company that have got a fantastic looking range of garments that haven’t lost there ruggedness or there functionality. Another Company that most of you will have heard off is CAT or Caterpillar. And Finally one more for good luck. Timberland, the favourite of the rapper.

Nice t-shirts for work. Shirts when your off, and not a nasty 80 looking shirt either. A nice, trendy shirt.

When Jennifer began to plan her wedding, she ran into one novel problem: how to dress her wedding guests.

Normally, this isn’t a problem. By tradition, a wedding is a formal event where guests are expected to show up either in tuxedos and gowns if part of the wedding party, or in suits and formal dresses if an invited guest.

By and large, everyone understands and accepts this. The details of proper attire for the guests is left entirely to the guests themselves. The bride has enough trouble worrying about her own and her bridesmaids’ gowns. Usually this works splendidly. Most people already know what they should wear to a wedding, or if not, they at least have enough sense to ask a mother or sister who will be delighted to explain exactly what they should and
should not wear.

Of course, even this does not always work. Now and then you find a poor schmuck with a sister who has a vindictive streak and you get a wedding guest who arrives wearing a plaid jacket, red and green striped tie and a yellow beanie with a propeller on top. But this is rare. Mostly your guests are well behaved and arrive appropriately dressed, sober and with the suitable amount of discomfort required of all wedding guests everywhere.

Jennifer’s wedding was going to be a little different. She (and her fiance of course) had decided to have a casual dress wedding at a country club overlooking the beach. The bride’s dress was still planned as a formal gown, but the bridesmaids would wear sun dresses and the best man and groom would wear khaki slacks and summer jackets.

Jennifer wanted her guests to know that they were encouraged to wear casual clothes. At least, fairly casual clothes. She wanted the ladies to come in summer dresses or skirts with nice blouses and the men to come wearing sport shirts and slacks with a jacket. No suits or ties, but also no T shirts and cut off shorts if you please. And especially no swim suits and bikini tops, thank you very much. The total effect was going to be a casual, country club style atmosphere. Relaxed but not scruffy. No, definitely not scruffy.

Jennifer wanted to say this in a nice way, without having to include a lengthy and offensive dress code decree in her invitation package. There is nothing quite so objectionable as having someone tell you in specific and didactic detail how you are supposed to dress. Jennifer was very much aware of this potential etiquette land mine and wanted wholeheartedly to avoid it.

On the other hand, she couldn’t just leave it to chance and simply say “casual attire” because sure as tank tops, someone would construe casual to mean T shirts, shorts and sneakers.

Jennifer fretted about this for days, trying several versions of her dress code message, none of which satisfied all the conflicting requirements of brevity, inoffensiveness and clarity.

Finally Jennifer hit upon the solution: a short, humorous poem, printed on an index sized card along with the invitation.

This would immediately let people know exactly how to dress and would offend no one. Since the poem would also be humorous, it had the benefit of being entertaining and therefore easily remembered.

Jennifer overcame the last hurdle of being unable to write poetry by hiring a poet and working with him through four drafts until she had exactly what she wanted: eight lines of lighthearted verse which told the guests how they should dress and left them with a smile.

With a sigh of relief, Jennifer could now focus on the next problem which needed her attention: the weather….
